MACRO means large, so MACRO-NUTRIENTS are nutrients that are needed in a large amount. There are 3 components of it.

So firstly let’s discuss in detail about these 3 MACRO-NUTRIENTS 

 

CARBOHYDRATES

On an average, Carbohydrates make up between 45 to 65% of an individual’s calories. 
They are important for several reasons

 They provide energy.

They help in regulating fat and protein metabolism.
They are also important for the cardiac and central nervous system.

After having the carbohydrate intake, All of the energy from the carbohydrates get stored into glycogen. So here we got a question. 

WHAT IS GLYCOGEN? 
Glycogen is stored carbohydrate in the liver and muscles and it is released in between meals to help regulate a person’s blood glucose levels in the body. 
NOTE – 1 gram Carbohydrates = 4 calories

PROTEIN

Let’s drag another macro into this list – Protein
Protein makes up between 10 to 35% of a person’s calories.
It helps to support tissue, building metabolism, immune function, and maintain nitrogen balance. In addition to this, it’s super important for wound healing as well. 
 
There are 2 types of proteins– 
Complete Proteins
 Incomplete Proteins
 Complete proteins contain sufficient amounts of all nine essential amino acids. It usually comes from animal sources or soy. Apart from this, incomplete proteins do not have all nine essential amino acids and typically come from Plant Sources.
NOTE – 1 gram Protein = 4 calories

FATS
 
Lastly, let’s talk about lipids or fats
So fats make up between 20 to 35% of an individual’s calories. 
For fat intake, we want to limit the amount of saturated fat that we consume on a daily basis. Ideally, this would be below 10%.  
 

Apart from this, fat is the main source of cholesterol for us but we don’t want to eat too much cholesterol because that can lead to things such as heart disease So, we want to limit cholesterol intake to less than 300 mg
NOTE – 1 gram Fat = 9 calories.
